目前，主流網線主要分為五類網線和六類網線，五類網線一般適合百兆網絡，六類網線一般適合千兆網絡，同時兼容百兆網絡。使用六類網線時，交換機和路由器都需換成千兆交換機和路由器，才能傳輸千兆網絡。
除了網絡傳輸環境不同，五類網線和六類網線的內部結構也是不同的。與五類網線相比，六類網線內部結構多了一個白色十字骨架，能保持4對線芯的先對位置，減少線對間的串擾，保持網線的平衡特性。
此外，六類網線的細銅絲會比五類的要粗一點，這從水晶頭插口排列可以看出，五類網線水晶頭的插口是呈一字排列的，而六類網線水晶頭是上下錯開兩排排列。
